History of IIHS Top Safety Picks: List of 2011 Models and Archive

We have good news for those of you who are looking to buy a safe car this year as the IIHS has just named their Top Safety Picks for 2011. We have the details on which cars have made the final list and also an insight into the history of IIHS Top Safety Picks.

We can tell you that 66 vehicles are featured on this years list, and they have been split up into 40 cars, 25 SUVs and one minivan according to Autoblog. For those of you that are unaware, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) dishes out awards for vehicles that manage to record the highest crash ratings.

One such vehicle on the list is the 2012 Volvo S60, as according to the IIHS, the roof on the vehicle managed to withstand an impressive 4.95 times its weight, despite the fact that the legal requirement is only 1.5 its weight – it obviously stands Volvo in good stead and sends a great message out to consumers that their motors are some of the safest around in 2011.
